Q. What can I expect during my first visit?

A. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early with your paperwork completed, if possible (you can download the forms from our website).  We will take a copy of your doctor’s orders (if you have one) and insurance card.  You will then be seen for the initial evaluation by the therapist.  This will include discussing the following:

  • your medical history
  • your present problem/complaint
  • pain intensity, what intensifies, eases the problem
  • how the problem is impacting your daily activities
  • your goals for physical therapy

Next, the therapist will provide you with a treatment for your problem/complaint.  Your treatment can include a variety of techniques and interventions.  Finally, a plan is developed with your input. This includes how many times you should see the therapist per week, how many weeks you will need therapy, home programs, patient education, short-term/long-term goals, and what is expected after discharge from therapy. This plan is created with your input.

Q. How long will each session last?

A. Typically each session will last 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Q. Will I see the same physical therapist for each session?

A. You will probably alternate between seeing a physical therapist and a physical therapist assistant for your sessions.  A physical therapist assistant (PTA) has completed an associate degree from an accredited PTA program and is licensed.  A PTA works under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, and assists the physical therapist in patient treatment and education.

Q. Do I need a referral from my doctor to start physical therapy?

A. No, you do not need a referral from your doctor to start physical therapy.  By law, you can see a physical therapist for up to 90 days without a referral from your doctor.  What this means is that you can see your physical therapist for health and wellness or aches and pains without having to go to your doctor first.  So when you have pain or concerns you can call your physical therapist first.  There are a few insurance plans that do require a referral from your physician so it may be helpful to know what your insurance covers and its policy.  If you need any help in finding out your insurance requirements we can assist you, just call us at 451-7888.

Q. Can I go to any physical therapy clinic?

A. Yes!  You and your insurance company pay for the service; therefore, your physician can recommend where to go but ultimately the choice is up to you. Therefore, keep in mind you can bring your physician’s referral to the physical therapy clinic of your choice.

Q. How do I choose a physical therapist?

A. Choosing a physical therapist should begin with insight into the therapist’s experience and familiarity in treating your condition.  Furthermore, consider the credentials of the physical therapist.  Today, graduates receive a Doctorate (DPT) in physical therapy.  Many therapists pursue post-graduate credentials, which include earning certification in certain areas of specialization such as sports medicine.  Research the physical therapy clinics before you decide where to go and ask questions regarding your injury/problem and the course of treatment you would receive.  Then, evaluate the facility where you will be receiving your physical therapy services.  Do they perform manual hands-on treatment?  Do they have the equipment needed to effectively treat you?  It is also important to know that if you are unhappy with the therapy services you are receiving, you have the right to change and receive services at a different physical therapy clinic.  Finally, ask around!  Speak to your friends and family, the people you trust or even a stranger on crutches.  If others are satisfied with their care then chances are you will be too.
